Charlottesville has done a lot to help people in poverty, but we need to do more to help people out of poverty — and to help our struggling middle class — by focusing on job creation.

Our city schools are doing lots of things right, but we still have unacceptably high dropout rates and achievement gaps, and we must consider some “out-of-the-box” changes, modeled on programs that have been proven to make an impact in other cities’ high-poverty neighborhoods.

As a regular bicycle rider and commuter, I know that this city is compact and has the potential to be a great place to get around by bicycle. Hundreds of people already do.  But we’ve got plenty of room to improve our support of walking and biking.
